Ultrahigh Energy Neutrinos and the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays

چکیده
It has been suggested that the characteristic energy of string models may be considerably lower than the observed Planck mass (≈ 10GeV). In such schemes, the unification of interactions takes place around the string scale, perhaps as low as a few tens of TeV. Consequently, at energies above the string scale, neutrinos acquire interactions comparable in strength to strong interactions. While they can propagate through the CMBR essentially uninhibited, in interactions with nuclei in the atmosphere they induce air showers comparable to proton induced ones. We conjecture that air showers above the GreisenZatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) cutoff in the cosmic radiation are induced by such neutrinos. A Monte Carlo simulation shows that neutrino induced “anomalous” showers are virtually indistinguishable from proton induced ones on an event-by event basis. Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays and Neutrinos
We discuss the relation between the highest energy cosmic rays (UHECR) and UHE neutrinos. The neutrinos produced in the sources of optically thin astrophysical sources have been linked to the UHECR emissivity of the Universe. The fluxes of cosmogenic neutrinos, generated in propagation by UHECR, also reflect the acceleration of these particles, the maximum acceleration energy, and the cosmologi...
متن کاملPossible detection of relic neutrinos and their mass
Recently the possibility was widely discussed that a large fraction of the highest energy cosmic rays may be decay products of Z bosons which were produced in the resonant annihilation of ultrahigh energy cosmic neutrinos on cosmological relic neutrinos. If one takes this so-called Zburst scenario seriously, one may infer the mass of the heaviest relic neutrino as well as the necessary ultrahig...
متن کاملPropagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays
We briefly describe the energy loss processes of ultrahigh energy protons, heavier nuclei and gamma rays in interactions with the universal photon fields of the Universe. We then discuss the modification of the accelerated cosmic ray energy spectrum in propagation by the energy loss processes and the charged cosmic ray scattering in the extragalactic magnetic fields. The energy lost by the ultr...
متن کاملZ-Burst Scenario for the Highest Energy Cosmic Rays
The origin of highest energy cosmic rays is yet unknown. An appealing possibility is the so-called Z-burst scenario, in which a large fraction of these cosmic rays are decay products of Z bosons produced in the scattering of ultrahigh energy neutrinos on cosmological relic neutrinos. The comparison between the observed and predicted spectra constrains the mass of the heaviest neutrino. The requ...
متن کاملTesting Lorentz Symmetry Using High Energy Astrophysics Observations
We discuss some of the tests of Lorentz symmetry made possible by astrophysical observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, γ-rays and neutrinos. These are among the most sensitive tests of Lorentz invariance violation because they are the highest energy phenomena known to man.
متن کاملNeutrinos from the Annihilation or Decay of Superheavy Relic Dark Matter Particles
In light of the mounting evidence that the highest energy cosmic rays are dominated by protons and not gammarays, we discuss the prospect that these cosmic rays are generated in the decay or annihilation of superheavy relic particles. We calculate the high energy neutrino spectrum which results and normalize our results to the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray spectrum. We show that most scenerios ar...
